Foodbank volunteers

Bart Aal

Quality Supervisor Cuijk

&

Veli Bulut

Shift Supervisor Operations Steenderen

What is your role at Aviko?

Bart: As Quality Supervisor at Aviko in Cuijk I devote my time to improving the quality of our potato products. My team and I constantly look for areas of improvement in our processes.

Veli: I am a Shift Supervisor in Steenderen. We produce specialties, such as Rösti and Pommes Duchesse. My daily work at Aviko involves a connection with the Foodbank. When a product is rejected, but still is a safe and tasty product, we ensure that it is passed on to the Foodbank. Things that come to mind here, for example, are products that accidentally contain the wrong herbs, but aside from this meet all other quality criteria.

Could you tell us about the project at the Foodbank?

Bart: I participate in the volunteer work pilots organised by Aviko. This means that a group of Aviko colleagues goes to work at the Foodbank in Arnhem – during working hours with full pay. The pilots are a big success and we will continue them! I am a member of the project group that organises the pilots.

“As Aviko employees, we help with the activities carried out in the background. For example, we prepare the pallets and wash the crates. We work in the outside air with a sociable and diverse group: ranging from the potato inspector to the ICT worker.”

Bart Aal - Quality Supervisor Cuijk

What specifically do you do at the Foodbank?

Bart: As Aviko employees, we help with the activities carried out in the background. For example, we prepare the pallets and wash the crates. We work in the outside air with a sociable and diverse group: ranging from the potato inspector to the ICT worker. All Aviko colleagues are allowed to participate. With the knowledge that many Aviko colleagues bring forward because of their daily work, we are able to make the Foodbank more efficient and safer. We regularly submit proposals for improvement when we see an opportunity for improvement.

Veli: I participated in a volunteer work pilot. I liked it so much that I have started to do volunteer work on a structural basis! I work at the Regional Distribution Centre in Arnhem, where deliveries to foodbanks in Arnhem and surroundings are coordinated. Because I have a forklift truck certificate I can work on loading and unloading. In addition, because of my work at Aviko I have a good eye for safety. The points for improvement I put forward make the work in the Regional Distribution Centre even safer. I enjoy doing this volunteer work.

What makes you value the work at the Foodbank as much as you do?

Bart: Everyone contributes to having the Foodbank operate effectively: this holds true whether you are washing crates or packing food. In addition, the atmosphere is very good. People are interested, motivated and happy. They are in frequent contact with each other and get to know new colleagues.

Veli: The most valuable thing a person can contribute is time. This is why I enjoy putting time and effort into volunteer work. I think it's great that Aviko and other companies supply products to the Foodbank. I hope that in the future even more high-quality food will be made available. This is important for the Foodbank's customers and it contributes to a more sustainable world!
