More biogas and less electricity

Maren Hübert

SHE Manager Rain

&

Karl Römer

Manager Project & Investments Rain

What is your role at Aviko and how do you contribute to our sustainability strategy?

Maren: On the basis of my role as HSE Manager in Rain, Germany, I work on improving our performance in the area of Health & Safety and Environment. My goal is to create broad safety and environmental awareness as a basis. In all projects, cooperation with all of the involved departments is of major importance and of course these serious topics should not be without joy.

Karl: My job at Rain is Manager Projects & Investments. We are working on many projects to make our site in Rain sustainable. For example, we are focused on making our energy flows, such as electricity and steam, more efficient. In 2022, we installed new, more efficient membrane plates in our wastewater treatment installation, which has significantly improved our electricity consumption.

What are some of the ongoing sustainability initiatives in Rain?

Maren: We are currently focusing on three objectives: reducing the residual waste in our offices, more efficient water consumption and CO2 reduction. In 2022, we mapped out our carbon footprint, making it possible for us to work on further reductions with a clear focus. Eighty percent of the steam needed for the production of fries today is produced by biomass from local waste wood. Natural gas is still used to produce the remaining 20%. We aim to further improve on this. The next step is to largely replace the natural gas with biogas generated by our own water treatment installation.

What are your expectations for the future in your profession? What are your sustainability goals?

Maren: Managing new developments relating to the environment and working on a more sustainable environment, that is my passion in the present and for the future. At Aviko I can make a much larger contribution to this than I ever would be able to do on my own.

Karl: Personally, developing ideas in further detail and developing myself every day in various areas, including sustainability, makes me happy. Professionally, I would like to work increasingly circular. For example, converting the plant's residual heat for use in district heating or making better use of waste products.

Tell us something about your safety role, Maren. What does the safety dialogue entail?

Maren: All managers engage their teams in a weekly safety dialogue. Aside from safety, this dialogue also covers food safety and energy. For each department, we determine a number of points of attention related to behaviour that managers regularly discuss with their employees over a period of three months. We use the safety dialogue to involve our employees in these topics and receive valuable feedback from them that enables us to continuously improve. In the area of safety, it is everyone's responsibility to adopt safe behaviour so as to prevent accidents. We attach a great deal of importance to safety awareness. Safety first!
